The Will of God

Gradient King 20 - 4K

I hope I am not the only one, but I remember as a kid playing the game M.A.S.H. This game of random chance would lay your life out for you; who you would marry, what job you would have, how many kids, what kind of house, and the list went on and on. There was mystery involved, you did not know what the outcome would be, until it played out before you. It was intriguing because it allowed the person to simply sit back and let chance decide ones fate.

Now as believers in Christ, words such as fate and chance are not in our vocabulary. We understand God is in full control of everything around us, nothing happens without His knowledge and allowance. But for some, this love of mystery can cause stagnation; an unwillingness to move because God’s will is not known. We do not deny mystery, for it is in abundance when it comes to the will of God. I am always reminded of Isaiah’s words in chapter 55:8,
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.” (ESV)

So although there is mystery, God’s will is not a complete mystery, especially when it comes to the Church, and individual believers. God chose to reveal Himself to His creation through His written word, and God’s Word is full of instruction and wisdom for God’s people. We become distracted with the ‘morally neutral’ decisions of life. What career should I have? What school should I go to? What house should I buy? We are asking ourselves the wrong question(s). The real question we should be asking is; how can God be glorified through me, no matter where He has me today?

The Bible is full of instruction and the fog that surrounds many of our decisions is lifted when we dig deep into what it means to be a Christian. Here are just a few passages to consider.

1 Thess. 4:3 “For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that you abstain from sexual immorality…”

1 Peter 2:15 “For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.”

1 Thess. 5:18 “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

So much could be said in regard to each of these passages. It is evident that God’s will is clearer than we may have thought. We are not stagnant, afraid to move; rather we are active, growing in holiness, and seeking to be salt and light to the world around us. This is His will for us; therefore pursue it with zeal; whether you’re in Canada or China, whether you’re an accountant or a nurse, whether you have three kids or seven kids; bring glory to your God wherever He has placed you.
